For 11 years Matthew has been a technician at Greenhous Vauxhall in Telford and so he knows all there is to know about maintaining and tuning his Suzuki GSXR 750 cc motorbike for the race season which is underway at present.
Along with his twin brother, William, he is a leading contender in the East Midlands Racing Association (EMRA) 2015 Rookie Championship held over 6 meetings at Mallory Park race circuit in Leicestershire. EMRA is a motorcycling race club which attracts many of the up and coming riders who are looking to aspire to become the professional stars of the future.
Matthew started to attend race days at the club just for fun but soon the competitive nature within him saw entry into real competition races. “I get a real buzz out of competing and after 3 rounds of the Rookie Championship I am leading, and my brother William is second, fourteen points behind me,” a delighted Matthew explains. “We are at the ‘rookie’ – new boys stage and are already out-pacing the opposition which can be around 25 in a race.”
Not content with racing in his class Matthew also enters the Superstock Class 1000 against more powerful bikes and more experienced riders. This gives him an opportunity to gain experience himself and hone his riding skills in race conditions.
Next year Matthew intends to race at different tracks with other clubs to improve his chances of being recognised as a talented rider who may just have that special quality to become an elite rider. However, motorcycle racing is an expensive business and Matthew does not have the support of sponsors. A pair of race tyres costs around £230 and will last him one round!
Potential sponsors can get in touch with Matthew at the Greenhous Vauxhall dealership in Trench Lock. You are sure of a warm welcome from this talented young man.
